MapleExpat Terms of Service
Version: terms-2026-10-16
Effective date: the date MapleExpat version 1.0 (build 6) is released
Version française : https://versurasolutions.com/mapleexpat/terms/fr
1. The agreement
These Terms are an agreement between you and Versura Solutions Inc., a corporation incorporated under the laws of Alberta, Canada ("Versura", "we", "us"), which operates the MapleExpat app (the "app"). Our contact details are in section 17.
You accept these Terms by ticking the box on the onboarding welcome screen that reads: "I understand — MapleExpat informs and reminds; it doesn't advise — and I agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy." We keep a record of the version of these Terms you accepted and when. If you do not agree, do not tick the box and do not use the app.
Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal information. It is a separate document and does not form part of this contract, but you should read it.
Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to your use of the app. If it conflicts with these Terms, these Terms apply as between you and us, to the extent the Apple agreement allows. Section 14 sets out the terms Apple requires.
Language. These Terms are available in French and in English. If you live in Quebec, the French version is offered to you first. If you accept the English version, you expressly wish to be bound by the English version. If the two versions differ, you may rely on whichever is more favourable to you. Les présentes conditions sont offertes en français. Si vous résidez au Québec, la version française vous est présentée en premier; si vous acceptez la version anglaise, vous exprimez la volonté expresse d'être lié par celle-ci.
2. What MapleExpat is, and what it is not
MapleExpat helps Canadians who are leaving Canada, living abroad or moving back keep track of Canadian tax and residency obligations. It offers:
- a Residency Signal computed from your answers;
- a checklist of obligations that may apply to you;
- general information about your country of residence;
- a counter of the days you spend in Canada and other countries;
- a Learn section of general reference information: answers to common questions, general information about investing from abroad, Finance Canada's list of countries with a tax treaty in force and short notes on the treaty with each country MapleExpat covers that has one in force, and explain-only guides to preparing your Canadian banking details before you leave;
- optional deadline reminder emails;
- Ask MapleExpat, an optional AI feature that answers questions from our reference content; and
- for Premium subscribers, a Pro Question Brief you can take to an accountant and a comparison of brokers' published policies for non-resident clients, with sources.
MapleExpat gives general information and reminders. It is not tax, legal, accounting, immigration, financial, banking or investment advice, is not an offer or recommendation of any financial product or service, and is not a tax filing service. No professional relationship is created between you and us. Rules change and your situation is your own, so confirm any decision that matters with a qualified cross-border professional.
2.1 The Residency Signal
The Residency Signal is a signal, never a determination. It is computed by fixed rules, not by AI, from the answers you give about your ties to Canada and the days you log. It does not decide whether you are a resident of Canada for tax purposes. Only the Canada Revenue Agency and the courts decide that, and a tax treaty can change the result. Where your situation is mixed or close, the app says so and suggests a professional look. A signal about a planned move is based only on the plans you entered.
2.2 Ask MapleExpat
Ask MapleExpat answers are generated by an AI model, Claude, made by Anthropic. The model is instructed to answer only from our reference content and the profile details you allow, to cite its source, and not to calculate tax owing, recommend filings or elections, or draft documents. Answers can still be incomplete, out of date or wrong, and no person reviews an answer before you see it. Canadian topics are checked against Government of Canada (canada.ca) sources. Topics about other countries, including the United States, are researched but not professionally reviewed. Do not rely on an answer for a decision that matters without speaking to a professional.
Ask works only after you give a separate consent to send your question and certain profile details to Anthropic, outside Canada. The Privacy Policy (section 6) sets out exactly what is sent and how long it is kept. You can withdraw that consent at any time in Settings.
2.3 Reminders and day counts
Reminders and day counts depend on the dates and answers you enter, on email delivery and on systems we do not control. A reminder may arrive late or not at all. Do not use MapleExpat as your only way of tracking a deadline. Dates in the app roll over at midnight UTC, so close to midnight a date in the app can differ from your local date.
2.4 Learn: brokers, treaties and banking information
Brokers. For Premium subscribers, the Investing abroad screen shows a comparison of the published policies of certain brokers for non-resident clients. Each entry is that company's own published policy, in its own words, as of the date shown, with a link to the page it comes from. We list brokers whose published policy describes a path for non-residents; the list is not complete and is not ranked. It is not an endorsement, recommendation, offer or solicitation, and it is not advice about whether to open, keep or move an account. Versura is not a broker, dealer, adviser or bank, and does not open or hold accounts or take orders. We have no commercial relationship with any broker listed and receive no payment from any of them. Policies change and depend on your country of residence and your own circumstances. A policy shown may be out of date. Confirm directly with the broker before you act.
Treaties. The Tax treaties screen shows Finance Canada's list of countries with a tax treaty in force, with the date we last compared it to the list, and a short note for each country MapleExpat covers that has a treaty in force. The notes are general. They are researched but not professionally reviewed, and what a treaty means for you depends on its text and your facts. Read the treaty and speak to a qualified professional.
Banking. The Before you go screen explains in general terms how to gather your Canadian banking details before you leave. It makes no statement about any particular bank.
3. Who may use MapleExpat
You must be at least 18 years old, and at least the age of majority where you live if that is higher. You must be able to form a binding contract and must not be barred from using the app under any law that applies to you.
4. Your account
You sign in with a 6-digit code sent to your email address, or with Sign in with Apple. Keep access to your email account and your Apple ID secure. You are responsible for the accuracy of what you enter; the app's output is only as good as your answers and dates.
5. Free and Premium
5.1 Free
MapleExpat is free to download. The free plan includes:
- the first 3 items of your checklist;
- 3 Ask MapleExpat questions in total for the life of your account (this allowance never resets);
- the Learn screens on common questions, tax treaties and banking preparation, and the questions and answers on Investing abroad;
- day tracking for Canada, with up to 5 trips; and
- deadline reminder emails for the checklist items you can see, if you turn them on.
5.2 Premium
MapleExpat Premium is a one-year subscription that renews automatically. It is sold through Apple's App Store. It adds:
- your full checklist;
- Ask MapleExpat, up to 15 questions a day (the count resets at midnight UTC);
- day tracking for every country you add;
- deadline reminder emails for your whole checklist, if you turn them on; and
- the Pro Question Brief; and
- a comparison of brokers' published policies for non-resident clients, with sources (see section 2.4).
5.3 Price and payment
- Price. The price is the one shown in the App Store when you subscribe, in your local currency. In Canada it is CAD 39.99 a year, plus any applicable sales tax, which Apple collects. There are no other charges.
- Payment. Apple charges the price to your Apple ID when you confirm the purchase. Apple sells the subscription as our agent. We never see your payment details.
- Your copy. Apple emails you a receipt. These Terms remain available at the address at the top of this page, where you can read, save or print them.
5.4 Automatic renewal
- Your subscription renews automatically for another year at the end of each year unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current year. Apple charges the renewal within the 24 hours before the year ends.
- Renewal notice. We will send you a notice by email no more than 60 and no fewer than 30 days before each renewal. It will give the renewal date, the price, your right to cancel and how to cancel, and will state that the subscription renews if you do nothing.
- Price changes. The price never changes during a year you have already paid for. If we change the price, the new price applies only from a later renewal. We and Apple will tell you before it takes effect, and Apple may ask for your consent before charging the new price. If you do not accept it, you can cancel before the renewal.
5.5 Cancelling
You can cancel at any time, before or after a renewal, for free. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose MapleExpat and tap Cancel Subscription. The Premium screen in the app also links to this page. If you cancel before a renewal date, nothing more is charged and Premium stays on until the end of the year you have paid for.
Deleting your MapleExpat account does not cancel your subscription. Cancel it with Apple first.
5.6 Refunds
Apple handles all billing and refunds under its own policies. To ask for a refund, go to reportaproblem.apple.com or contact Apple Support. We cannot issue refunds through the App Store ourselves. If Apple refunds your subscription, Premium ends straight away.
Your legal rights. If the consumer protection law where you live gives you a right to a refund, that right applies and nothing in these Terms limits it. For example, in British Columbia, if you cancel after an annual renewal, you are entitled to a refund of the portion of the price for the unused part of the year, calculated as the law prescribes. You can request it from Apple. If you have any difficulty getting a refund you are entitled to by law, contact us (section 17).
5.7 Restoring and moving devices
If you reinstall the app or move to a new device, tap Restore Purchases on the Premium screen to get Premium back at no extra cost.
5.8 When Premium ends
When a subscription ends (because you cancelled, a renewal failed or Apple refunded it), your account returns to the free plan automatically and the app tells you. What happens to your information:
- your profile and trips are kept;
- checklist items you have marked done, not applicable, snoozed or flagged for your pro are kept;
- items you had not touched that go beyond the free limit are removed from your checklist, and if you subscribe again, the app adds them back from your profile;
- you cannot add trips beyond the free limit, but the trips you already have stay; and
- the broker comparison on Investing abroad is locked again; the questions and answers on that screen stay available;
- your Ask allowance is whatever remains of your 3 free questions. Questions you asked as a Premium subscriber do not count against it.
If Apple cannot renew because of a billing problem, Premium continues only for any grace period Apple allows.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use MapleExpat unlawfully;
- get around the app's question limits, trip limits or other usage limits, or interfere with its security or operation;
- access it by automated means other than the app itself;
- try to make Ask MapleExpat produce content outside its purpose, or present its output to anyone as professional advice or an official determination; or
- copy, reverse engineer or resell the app or its reference content, except as the law expressly allows.
Nothing in these Terms stops you from publishing or sharing an honest review of MapleExpat or of how we have treated you.
7. Your content
You keep ownership of what you enter. You allow us to store and process it to run the app as described in the Privacy Policy. This includes sending Ask questions and profile details to Anthropic, but only once you have consented.
8. Our intellectual property
The app, its design, software and reference content belong to us or our licensors. We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive, revocable licence to use the app on Apple devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial purposes, as the App Store's usage rules permit. You may use the answers and the Pro Question Brief generated for you for your own purposes, including sharing them with your advisers. We do not claim ownership of the law or of government publications.
9. Third-party services
MapleExpat relies on services run by others: Supabase (database and sign-in), Anthropic (Ask MapleExpat), RevenueCat (subscription status), Resend (email, delivered through Amazon Web Services) and Apple (Sign in with Apple and App Store billing). Their services are subject to their own terms. If one of them has an outage, we will work to restore MapleExpat as quickly as we reasonably can.
Links to other sites. Some screens link to pages run by others, such as canada.ca, Finance Canada and the brokers listed in section 2.4. A link opens the page in your browser, outside the app. We do not control those sites or their content, and their own terms and privacy policies apply.
10. Deleting your account and ending these Terms
You can delete your account at any time in Settings, which ends these Terms. The Privacy Policy explains what is deleted and what is not. Cancel any subscription with Apple first.
We may suspend or close your account only if you seriously or repeatedly breach these Terms, or where the law requires it. We will tell you why, unless the law or the safety of others prevents it. If your account is closed for a reason other than your breach while you have paid for Premium, you can ask Apple for a refund of the unused portion, and any refund right the law gives you applies (section 5.6).
We may stop offering MapleExpat by giving you at least 30 days' notice in the app and by email. If you have paid for Premium beyond the date we stop, you can ask Apple for a refund of the unused portion, and any refund right the law gives you applies (section 5.6).
Sections 7, 8, 11, 12, 15 and 16 continue after these Terms end.
11. Warranty
We provide MapleExpat with reasonable care and skill. Beyond that, and to the extent the law allows, MapleExpat is provided "as is" and "as available". We make no promise that the app or its content is complete, current or suitable for your particular situation, or that it will be uninterrupted or error-free. This section does not exclude or limit any warranty that the consumer protection law where you live gives you and that cannot be excluded by contract, including the legal warranty under Quebec's Consumer Protection Act.
12. Liability
To the extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss;
- we are not liable for tax, interest, penalties or other loss that results from relying on the app instead of a qualified professional; and
- our total liability to you for all claims arising from or relating to the app or these Terms is limited to the greater of (a) CAD 100 and (b) what you paid for Premium in the 12 months before the event that gave rise to the claim.
These limits do not apply to loss caused by our fraud, gross negligence or wilful misconduct, to bodily or moral injury, or where the law where you live does not allow them. If you are a consumer in Quebec, this section does not apply to the extent the Consumer Protection Act or the Civil Code of Québec prohibits it.
You are responsible for claims made by third parties against us that result from your intentional or negligent breach of these Terms, to the extent the law allows. This paragraph does not apply to consumers in Quebec.
13. Changes to MapleExpat and to these Terms
We update the app and its reference content from time to time, and we may add features to the free plan or to Premium at any time. Adding a feature to Premium during a year you have already paid for does not reduce what Premium includes. We may change these Terms only as to: the app's features and content; the free plan's limits; the Ask question limits; the third-party services we use; how we handle personal information (always in line with the Privacy Policy); and wording that clarifies these Terms or reflects changes in the law. During a year you have already paid for, we will not change the price or the length of your subscription, and we will not make a change that reduces what Premium includes or increases what you owe. Any such change applies only from a later renewal, after the renewal notice in section 5.4.
Before any change to these Terms takes effect, we will send you written notice by email, and show it in the app, at least 30 days in advance. The notice will set out the new or changed clause, the clause as it read before, the date the change takes effect, and your rights. If the change increases your obligations or reduces ours, you may refuse it and end these Terms at no cost, penalty or cancellation fee by deleting your account, cancelling your subscription or telling us, no later than 30 days after the change takes effect. If you have paid for Premium beyond that date, you can also ask Apple for a refund of the unused portion.
When a change is significant, we will also ask you to accept the new Terms in the app. If you do not accept them, you can still export your data and delete your account.
14. Terms Apple requires
- These Terms are between you and Versura, not Apple. Versura, not Apple, is solely responsible for the app and its content.
- Your licence is limited to use on Apple-branded products you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. Support is provided by Versura (section 17).
- If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) of the app to you. To the maximum extent the law permits, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app. Any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses attributable to a failure to conform to a warranty are Versura's responsibility, to the extent these Terms provide.
- Versura, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the app or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- If a third party claims that the app or your possession and use of it infringes that party's intellectual property rights, Versura, not Apple, is solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging the claim.
- You represent and warrant that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must comply with any applicable third-party terms when using the app.
- Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms. When you accept these Terms, Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
15. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Subject to the next paragraph, you and Versura agree that the courts of Alberta, sitting in Edmonton, have jurisdiction over any dispute.
Where you live matters. If you are a consumer, nothing in this section takes away the protection of the mandatory laws of the province, territory or country where you live, or your right to bring proceedings in the courts there. In particular:
- Quebec: if you live in Quebec, these Terms are governed by the laws of Quebec, and you may bring any dispute before the courts of Quebec;
- class proceedings and arbitration: these Terms contain no arbitration clause and no waiver of class proceedings. You keep any right you have to go to court, alone or as part of a class proceeding; and
- European Union and United Kingdom: if you live there, you keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of your country and may bring proceedings in your local courts.
Before starting a formal dispute, please contact us (section 17) so we can try to resolve it. This is a request, not a condition.
16. General
These Terms, together with the Apple terms in section 1, are the whole agreement between you and us about the app. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect. You may not transfer these Terms to anyone else. We may transfer them to a successor to the business, if that does not reduce your rights. If we do not enforce a term, we have not waived it. Notices to you go to the email address on your account or appear in the app. Notices to us go to the contact details in section 17.
