MapleExpat: stay organized when life crosses borders

Leaving Canada, living abroad, or moving back? MapleExpat helps you keep track of possible Canadian tax and residency obligations, the travel days you log, upcoming deadlines, and questions to take to a cross-border professional.

MapleExpat provides general information and reminders. It does not file tax returns, give professional advice, or determine your tax residency.

See what may apply as you return, and what to ask a professional before you do.

How it works

  2. Review the checklist items that may apply and your Residency Signal.
  3. Log your trips and see your day counts.
  4. Choose whether to get optional email reminders for checklist deadlines.

What the product actually does.

Practical tools for complex cross-border lives.

  • Residency Signal

A deterministic tracker for residency ties. We deliberately call it a signal, never a legal determination, keeping the user safely on the right side of professional advice.

  • Day Counter and Deadlines

Log your trips and see your day counts in each country, paired with optional email reminders for checklist deadlines.

  • Country notes

A plain-language explanation for each of 21 countries, including its tax treaty with Canada where one exists.

  • Ask MapleExpat

A Claude-powered assistant for plain-language explanations of complex tax concepts and knowledge base articles.

What each feature does

Residency Signal

Calculated from your answers using fixed rules, not by AI. It is a signal to discuss with a professional, not an official determination.

Checklist

Shows obligations that may apply to the situation you entered. You can manage the items: mark them done, not applicable, snoozed or flagged for your professional.

Day counter

Counts days from the trip countries and dates you enter. MapleExpat does not record your location.

Reminders

Optional email reminders for the checklist deadlines you can see. Email delivery is not guaranteed, so keep an eye on your deadlines in the app too.

Country notes

Plain-language information for the countries listed below, including the Canada tax treaty where one exists.

Ask MapleExpat

Optional AI explanations drawn from MapleExpat's reference content. Answers may be incomplete, out of date or wrong.

Pro Question Brief

A Premium feature: a brief of your situation and recent questions that you can take to an accountant.

Countries covered

MapleExpat has country notes for these 21 countries. Where a country is not listed, you can still use the checklist, day counter and reminders.

  • China
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hong Kong

The notes include the Canada tax treaty where one is in force: 18 of the 21. Qatar and Saudi Arabia are under negotiation and Cambodia has none (treaty status checked 7 August 2026). Canadian topics are checked against Government of Canada sources. Topics about other countries are researched but not professionally reviewed.

The Architecture: A Trust Firewall

01

Deterministic Rules Engine

All obligation logic, day counting, and compliance thresholds are handled by a strict, versioned rules engine. There is no LLM involved in the core math. The Residency Signal is calculated from your answers using fixed rules, not guessed by AI. It's a signal to take to a professional, never a determination.

02

AI for Explanation Only

We use large language models strictly for the "Ask MapleExpat" feature to translate complex rules into plain language. The AI explains the rule, but it never writes the rule.

03

Protected Data Boundaries

Sensitive financial data is handled with strict privacy boundaries. MapleExpat doesn't use your information to train AI, and our AI provider, Anthropic, doesn't train its models on our users' questions by default. Users have full data export and account deletion controls.

The same architecture we bring to your workflows.

When we build AI systems for international schools and SMEs, we use this exact same philosophy. We identify the steps that require strict compliance and lock them behind deterministic trust firewalls. We reserve AI for the tasks it is actually good at, like drafting, summarizing, and translating.

MapleExpat

01

Rules, not AI guesses

Fixed rules, not AI, decide the core calculations. AI only explains, and its answers can still be wrong.

02

Transparent logic

You can audit exactly why a system made a specific decision.

03

Platform-agnostic deployment

We select the right models and frameworks for your specific data sensitivity.
